CHILTERN RED KITES

Red Kites were reintroduced to the Chilterns from1989 to 1994 using chicks from northern Spain.  They were nearly extinct in the UK by the mid-20th century but there are now over 100 breeding pairs in the area.  Red Kites are large birds around 75cm long and with a wing span of up to two metres.  They soar on thermals and have very acute eye sight with which they can spot potential food from very high.  They are mainly scavengers and help to keep the countryside clean.
