ORKNEY 1974
These monochromes were taken in 1974 during a visit to Stromness in Orkney, an island group situated around 10 miles off the north coast of Scotland. The journey by ferry passes the dramatic coastline of the Isle of Hoy, including the iconic sea stack known as
the Old Man of Hoy, one of Scotland’s most celebrated rock-climbs. The images also capture the remains of the Norwegian trawler Norhomen, which ran aground on the Kirk Rocks on 23 November 1966. When these photographs were taken the wreck still lay on the beach beside Stromness Cemetery, just west of the town centre, before eventually being dismantled for scrap. Beyond the wreck, Black Craig Hill rises in the background, with its observation post faintly visible on the skyline.
